Landon and Logan loved the elephant in Piazza Duomo. We had to stop twice for them to climb and play, and watch the fountains.
On this day, we were thrilled to see that we could actually go inside the Roman amphitheatre. This amphitheatre was once the second-largest amphitheatre in the ancient world! It was second only to the Colosseum in Rome. Today, not much is left of it. The lava stones were taken from it to build the Piazza Duomo and other structures in Catania, and it was partially demolished at one point to discourage enemies from climbing the walls. An earthquake finished it off, and Catania grew around it.
Even though it's only a fraction of its former size, it's an awesome experience to go inside and explore the vaulted walkways and seating area, the orchestra pit, and rooms we'll never know the use of. Landon even said, "I'd so much rather play here than at home!" And that is saying something for a seven-year-old boy whose life revolves around playing on his street with his friends.
We also visited the Giardini Bellini, or the Bellini Gardens. This is a gorgeous oasis in the middle of the city. As it is January, the date was spelled out in large white stones, but during seasonable times of the year, the date is displayed in flowers--and changed every day. There is a large field where children can play, and there was a small carnival assembled though they weren't operating that day. There are decorative pathways made from little pebbles in black and white patterns. And there is an enormous ornate gazebo. We can't wait to go back and see the Gardens in spring and summer.
On our way back to the car, we saw that the Basilica Cattedrale was open, so I took the boys inside. The Nativity scene was still on display! It was a beautiful sight.
